An acquaintance of mine in the midwest, not NYC or CA, but Minneapolis who works in machinery. Its the real deal, they take big aluminum blocks and make custom valves out of them and they just cant hire machinists... but what do you expect at 3.6% unemployment??? So, they had to revert to robots. These are your typical articulated arms with cameras. They are fairly simple to program, work 24.7 and dont require bathroom breaks or lighting. They set them up, let them drill away throughout the night and wrap things up in the AM and buff the finished work. at 200k a pop, theyre planning on purchasing a few more and the investment quickly pays for itself as it can produce more and better than a human could. That competition has already started, , there are a lot of tech workers ready to tackle new jobs, the problem is a lot of these companies just arent willing to offer the right salaries. Theres a reason many leave for SF as a six-figure salary in SF stars with a 2 or 3 while a six-figure salary anywhere else mostly starts with a 1. Associations 2018 State of the App Economy report revealed that there is just one computer science graduate for every eight available computing jobs. So, were not quite there where robots can write computer code, but some automation tasks, like writing manuals, advertising, and support operators are already here. So moving on to the bad. The US postal services tested out its first automated mail shipment - its still symbolic, but were definitely progressing. this is from the Verge, The United States Postal Service (USPS) has chosen self-driving trucking company TuSimple to haul mail as part of a two-week test of the startups autonomous technology. TuSimple will carry the mail on five round trips between the USPSs Phoenix, Arizona, and Dallas, Texas, distribution centers, which is a stretch of more than 1,000 miles. USPS workers have had their hours cut, their pensions threatened, so this doesnt bode well. We know that everybody is experimenting with deliveries using robots. Drones, robots, blimps, and catapult yeah, unfortunately not a job with safe future prospects - and thats just the bad... theres more. And now for the BAD I know some feel that there are jobs that just shouldnt exist as they are classified as demeaning, dangerous, grinding, that will kill you over the long run, etc. But I think the right to work will always supersede these type of ideals especially when were all living in a money-based society and survival here means working. and this is bad, because it is really happening and Amazon is very visible so we pay attention but its happening everywhere. Do you think those guys making valves with the robot will turn them off during the next economic downturn where everybody would beg for that type of work? Fat chance - thats bad! I mentioned you had to prepare yourself, here is a simple application on ViralML.com that will tell you the probability of your job being replaced by a robot. So play around with this, if you are in the high numbers, look for jobs in the low ones to reinvent yourself! Also, a whisper to the tech resistance - to all programmers out there - dont be in such a hurry to automate yourself out of work! Once its done, its really the end of the old way of making a living.
