Fake It till You Make It
“You must be the person you have never had the courage to be. Gradually, you will discover that you are that person, but until you can see this clearly, you must pretend and invent.”
― Paulo Coelho
“Fake it till you make it” is that piece of advice we dole out to those who worry about a new job or big challenge. It’s given it to those that have impostor syndrome. It’s given to those who are starting a new task that feels beyond their capabilities. And we can use this same advice on ourselves.
We have all doubted ourselves before starting a new job yet we powered through the initial fears and stepped up to the plate and got over the hurdle. And when we got over it, we realized that our worries were unfounded.
But you can direct this advice to yourself. If you feel it is valid, and that whatever is blocking you is blocking you because a task seems daunting or beyond your capabilities then tell yourself to fake it till you make it!
This means diving headfirst into the task and getting it started. It doesn’t matter if it confuses you or if you’re not doing it correctly, the act of starting something can demolish big hurdles. You can always redo or fix things later on.
So, the next time you feel that a task is too challenging and would be better off left for the weekend, another week, or another decade, tell yourself to fake it till you make it. Don’t look back, don’t question yourself, just dive right in and see what happens once you broke the biggest obstacle to all and every accomplishment.
