Don't Build Your SaaS App a Top a Volcano

Introduction

We dont build a house on top of a volcano, so we shouldnt build a SaaS app there either. Make sure you are prepared and a Plan-B ready. When I first heard about Huwai, which I pronounced as Hawai - tells you how much I knew about the company. But when I heard they wouldnt be able to use integrated Android features like the Google store, or use ARM chips, or US SD cards, IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) banned Huawei employees from the peer-review process when writing papers - though that got overturned recently. I was like wow, theyre finished, the volcano erupted. I havent followed this closely and it only came on my radar when chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada in December 2018 and apparently is still awaiting extradition - they saying like in 2020? I hope I never get extradited... Google, as a result, is stating that banning them is more dangerous in the long run. As we are now seeing govs not aligned with us dumping silicon valley products For example, the Government of China and Russia are dumping Microsoft windows. Huwai, first of all is a huge company like Cisco - so they have diversified thus not everything is on top of the volcano. They also have other OSs, other chips they can use if it goes that far. Tho, theyre mobile phone units is taking a huge hit. I didnt use that in the title because I just dont understand the issue well enough on too many levels - theres patent disputes, espionage, etc. But I do know you shouldnt build a Saas app on a volcano and thats what I want to talk about here Twitter, for example, has repeatedly tightened its API which has caused many companies to go bankrupt or pivot desperately and quickly. In 2014, for example, DataSift, a multimillion dollar company, was offering Analytics by parsing through the appropriately named Twitter fire hose and offering up analytics. DataSift and Twitter had been working together for 3 years at that point. That is until Twitter bought a competing service and revoked DataSifts access to the fire hose. It closely averted the Volcano by shifting to Facebook and working with them. Others werent so lucky. Another case is Cambridge Analytica - the human virus that stole data on almost 90million users, they caused Facebook to change its policies on its API and which hurt countless SaaS companies and probably triggered the GDPR. So it is critical to analyze exactly where your revenue is coming from, and if its a singular source, to try and diversify. Ive often been told that I dont promote my videos well enough. so Ive been vamping up my use of Twitter. I have also started following people I think may be interested in my channel. Promotion, right? Well, I got a taste of being banned. For a few hours, something I did, not sure what as I dont use rapid fire tools. This got me worried about the volcano. What if Youtube banned me? That wouldnt be a monetary issue as it isnt a source of revenue. But it is an important hobby of mine and Id hate to lose. What can I do as an alternative and to protect myself? well, for starters, I have backups of all my videos so I could post them on Vimeo for example. What about ourselves? Are we our own volcano? Renting our time out isnt sustainable, were getting older, etc. A reason that I would hate to lose YT, is that its my main brand building tool, its my voice. My videos from 5 years ago are still being watched! Ive scaled myself. Its why I always recommend that you push things out in the public domain on a regular basis - GitHub, write books, make videos, answer questions on stack overflow, multiply yourself so it isnt anymore one unit of effort to one unit of reward!
